Focus vs. rumination
Focusing on something must be a conscious decision. If you're making the choice to focus, you can move that attention to something else when you want to. That is healthy. On the otherhand, rumination is attention without control. You're along for your mind's ride. Not only do you lose the ability to direct your attention, you're also unable to observe your emotions. It's a vicious, counter-productive cycle.
